.i was going to
write an article about sportsmanship and the mutual respect between the two rival schools la salle and ateneo after watching game 5 on television last sunday. after the game, as the blue eagles were singing their school hymn, the cameras panned to the la salle gallery. quiet, unmoving, letting their rivals pay homage to their alma mater. after the song, cameras showed the green gallery applauding. wow, that’s nice, i said to myself. wished i was there to witness such a display of respect between the two bitter rivals. however, it was quite a different story as i found out later through the forums.
here are some of the comments:
......You should have seen how the Ateneo crowd shifted their full attention to bashing the DLSU crowd (with 'Wrong Spelling' and 'Suspended' chants) instead of cheering for their basketball team. They were so into the bashing thing that they failed to notice their team was self-destructing on the floor. Even Salamat and Arao were too busy taunting the DLSU players instead of falling back early to play defense......
.......Did the Ateneans figure out what the '488' banner meant? Or did we have to explain it to them pa? Buti na lang Bro. Bernie requested the crowd to pull the banner down. The Ateneans flashed the 'Suspended' banner in all 5 matches and the Jesuit priests didn't care. In fact, they even displayed a new 'Wrong Spelling' banner during the last 2 games. Again, the Jesuits didn't care. Dick Gordon? He was pointing to the banner whenever he felt like it. I wonder how Gordon reacted when he saw the '488' banner?
......about the "taeneo" thing, did the la salle brothers teach you this? As I remember, when I was studying in LSGH, la salle brothers taught us to be "Christian Gentlemen who live the Gospel" but from what i see now, there are so many lasallians who act uncivilized. Stop it and be more responsible on your actions!
apparently i was wrong. or were these just isolated cases? i sure hope so, because part of the reason for the uniqueness and longevity of this rivalry is the respect for each other as an institution, their high regard for each other's capacity. let us not forget this. after all, it was just a basketball game.
