Blog Entrycris mendez: another statistic?Sep 15, '07 2:04 AM
for everyone
.
it has been two weeks since the murder of cris anthony mendez from hazing and, judging from news reports, the case against his killers has barely moved. though the police have written statements from a few witnesses, it cannot be considered substantial in a case like this. the fraternity-member suspects have been issued subpoenas but no one is coming forward, invoking their right to remain silent. yes, that’s correct. they have that right, but what about the right of cris mendez to get justice? what about the rights of his family? will cris suffer the same fate as lenny villa, alex icasiano and others murdered by hazing? will he be just another statistic?

apart from the investigation being done by the police and the national bureau of investigation (NBI), UP should vigorously look into the case and conduct its own independent findings. as the premier educational institution of the country it should tap its vast intellectual resources, from the faculty to the student body, to look into this case. they owe it to their students, and definitely to the whole country, to justify why some of the brightest scholars of the nation end up becoming murderers!

sigma rho should be held accountable for this. they should not be allowed to talk and influence their way out of this. a shame for an organization whose main credo is promoting brotherhood, just like the other fraternities previously involved in hazing murders!

isn’t it suspicious that we have not heard any official statement from sigma rho about this murder? after two weeks? isn’t it just proper for an organization involved in any controversy to issue official denials or statements to the effect that they will exert all efforts to solve any accusation? why so silent sigma rho? why do we feel that instead of officially condemning the killing, the murder suspects have even found shelter inside your organization?

cris mendez was killed trying to get into the organization he thought would protect him, by the same people who promised him their brotherhood. his case should not end like the others before him. no more lenny villas and alex icasianos! it’s about time fraternity murderers are punished.

postscript: isn’t it ironic and spine-tingling to think that the persons involved in lenny villa’s murder some years back are now in our midst as practicing lawyers? lawyers who swore to uphold justice?
